A Simple Model of the Melt Fracture Instability

چکیده

In this note we develop and analyze a system of equations describing a molten linear polymer being extruded in a capillary rheometer which is operating under the controlled condition that the mean velocity at the capillary inlet is maintained at a constant value. Slipping of the melt at the pipe wall is permitted and an evolution equation for the boundary slip parameter is postulated. The combined system governing the mean cross-sectional velocity and slip parameter is shown to exhibit relaxation oscillations similar to those observed in actual rheometers.

Intrinsic route to melt fracture in polymer extrusion: a weakly nonlinear subcritical instability of viscoelastic poiseuille flow.

As is well known, the extrusion rate of polymers from a cylindrical tube or slit (a "die") is in practice limited by the appearance of "melt fracture" instabilities which give rise to unwanted distortions or even fracture of the extrudate. We present the results of a weakly nonlinear analysis which gives evidence for an intrinsic generic route to melt fracture via a weakly nonlinear subcritical...

Evaluation of Simultaneous Effect of Melt Filtration and Cooling Rate on Tensile Properties of A356 Cast Alloy

The combined influence of both melt filtration and cooling rate on the microstructure features and mechanical properties of A356 cast alloy was studied. A step casting model with five different thicknesses was used to obtain different cooling rates. The effect of melt filtration was studied by using of 10 and 20 ppi ceramic foam filters in the runner. Results showed that secondary dendrite arm ...

Experimental evidence for an intrinsic route to polymer melt fracture phenomena: a nonlinear instability of viscoelastic Poiseuille flow.

The production rate of polymer fibers by extrusion is usually limited by the appearance of a series of instabilities ("melt fracture") that lead to unwanted undulations of the surface. We present both qualitative and quantitative experimental evidence that-in addition to previously known polymer-specific scenarios-there is an intrinsic route towards melt fracture type phenomena: a nonlinear ("s...

A simple and efficient plasticity-fracture constitutive model for confined concrete

A plasticity-fracture constitutive model is presented for prediction of the behavior of confined plain concrete. A three-parameter yield surface is used to define the elastic limit. Volumetric plastic strain is defined as hardening parameter, which together with a nonlinear plastic potential forms a non-associated flow rule. The use of non-associated flow rule improves the prediction of the dil...

Analysis and Suppression of Instabilities in Viscoelastic Flows

The viscoelastic character of polymer solutions and melts gives rise to instabilities that are not seen in the flows of Newtonian liquids. In industrial applications such as coating and extrusion, these so-called “elastic” instabilities can impose a limitation on the throughput. Hence, it is important to understand, and if possible, to suppress them. The first instability we study is the phenom...
